Risks
Please read the following carefully to understand the potential risks and complications following surgery.
All surgery has its inherent risks and complications. Results or possible expected outcomes are variable based on individual circumstances, genetics, medical conditions, goals and capacity to heal.
It is important to understand the risks of surgery and possible complications that may arise from surgery. It is difficult to predict the exact nature of recovery but it is more important to understand what is expected during the surgical journey of recovery. It is imperative to have a comprehensive consultation with Dr Nara prior to any surgery, ask questions and take time to understand the risks of surgery. Our team at RevAesthetic, routinely review our patients at least 3 times prior to surgery so as to empower your understanding about the procedure whilst making ourselves available should you have any concerns or questions.
Expected risks after surgery:-
- Bruising. This usually occurs a few days after surgery. As all individuals are different, some may experience this sooner or some later. The degree of bruising may change depending on capacity to heal as well as compliance to instructions.
- Swelling. After surgery, all soft tissues exposed to surgery will attempt to heal. This is the body's normal reaction. Each patient is unique and different and may heal differently to one another.
- Discomfort. Any patient may experience varying degrees of feeling uncomfortable after surgery. This depends on genetics, medical conditions or any reason.
- Pain. After surgery, all patients will experience varying degrees of pain. All patients must comply with all instructions and take medications as prescribed.
Complications that may occur during or after surgery:-
- Bleeding. Bleeding is expected to occur after surgery but should not be excessive. If there are concerns during recovery this will be promptly attended to by the medical team and the appropriate steps taken to rectify the situation. There are medications that may increase the risks of bleeding and therefore you must communicate this with our team prior to surgery during the consultation process. This risk is higher if you have a history of massive weight loss.
- Infection. The risks of infection are tripled if you are an active smoker. All patients must cease smoking 5 weeks prior to surgery. Other medical issues may contribute to the increased risk of infection such as with diabetes, autoimmune diseases, or other infections.
- Wound breakdown. This may occur due to infection, accumulation of fluid, suture breakdown, or even non-adherence to peri-operative instructions.
- Scarring - all surgery require incisions and therefore there are risks of scarring.
- Asymmetry. One side of the body, while may appear symmetrical, has differences to the other side of the body. Even after surgery, there are differences throughout the stages of recovery and even in the long term. Perfect symmetry does not exist.
- Medical issues. There are significant preparations prior to surgery even so medical complications may arise that you must be aware about such as but not limited to heart attack, lung infection or allergic reactions.
Overall complications:-
- The more operations performed in a single anaesthetic setting, the higher the risks of surgery. For example, if you are planning to have simultaneous breast augmentation with fat grafting together with mini-abdominoplasty, the overall risks become higher. This includes surgical, anaesthetic and/or medical risks.
- Overall
COVID - 19
"COVID-19" instructions or protocols apply prior to any surgery especially if you recently had COVID-19 infection.
Rare complications:-
- Necrotising fasciitis - severe infection of the soft tissues
- Chronic pain - some patients may experience life long discomfort.
- Nerve injury - this may present as either severe numbness of tissues or disablement of movement of any part of the body (including face, trunk or limbs).
Mortality:-
- Death - while all surgery have risks, there is a remote risk of death in any surgery. This may occur due to any reason whether it may be surgical, anaesthetic, medical or other unforeseen issues.
Dissatisfaction of results:-
Despite best efforts to ensure the best outcomes in surgery, there is always a risk or chance of dissatisfaction of the outcome or results of surgery. This may occur sometime after surgery where, at times, the results may be affected by not just the surgery but also patient genetics, medical conditions, injury, illness or the ageing process. It is imperative to seek another consultation with your original surgeon as they would understand you better in particular the details of the initial surgery.
